From Boys to Men of Heart: Book Review

by Lon Woodbury on August 27, 2009

To be released September 15th, the book “From Boys to Men of Heart: Hunting as Rite of Passage”  by Dr. Randall Eaton looks in part to be a unique treatment of a rather controversial topic, that of hunting.

A review of this forthcoming book says “a very interesting approach to boys and growing up.  It connects Native American spirituality with European-based and African-based hunting traditions to explore the unique relationships boys have had and can have with nature.”

The announcement of advance sales of this book can be found at http://www.randalleaton.com/.

Although hunting has become somewhat politically incorrect in our society, anybody who is interested in how boys develop into men should at least take a look at this book with an open mind.  The author seems to be implying that there is something about hunting that touches boys in a very deep way, and ignoring or denying this possibility might have the risk of damaging the natural development of boys.  At lease that is my first impression of what the author probably concludes.

I was raised in Idaho, had a 22 rifle in my hands as a pre-teen, and some of my best memories of my father were on Elk hunting trips into Idaho’s wilderness.  In my personal experience, I can relate to what seems to be the focus of this book, that hunting satisfies a basic need of a young boy.

But, I’m open to other views, and hope to receive reviews of the book once it has been released.
